Only Vans: Vanlife with a child!

Rich and Lisa met three years ago and started dating in October 2021. By January 2022, they were living in a caravan on a seasonal pitch. Their whirlwind romance even got featured in Take a Break magazine as the “Caravan of Love!” They both have daughters from previous relationships (now 14, 23, and 22), and neither of them thought they’d have more kids, but they knew straight away they wanted to try.

At 42, they decided to start trying right away, and by February 2022, Lisa was pregnant. However, Lisa developed a grade 4 placenta previa, which led to complications. At 30 weeks, she was hospitalized, and after several bleeding episodes, Rory was born via emergency c-section at 33 weeks on September 2nd. She had a life-saving hysterectomy, and Rory spent time in NICU, but thankfully, they both made it through. This traumatic experience pushed them to hit the road.

They started traveling in their family campervan and in July last year, upgraded to their Chausson Welcome 72 motorhome, where they now live, work, and travel full-time. Rory spent his first few months in the caravan and has been on the road ever since! They even head to Morocco for the winter (6 months), where they love the community spirit!

Was your decision to live alternatively a sudden realisation or a build up of moments over time?

A bit of both really. Initially it was an extremely problematic labour where I (Rich/ Dad) wasn’t sure whether either Mum or baby would make it. So after that and once they had both managed to get out of intensive care we decided to have a debacle in our SWB Ford Transit Campervan. We had a pot of money we had from Lisa being bought out of her house by her ex-husband and we planned to be away for 12 months but spent our budget in 4 months. So I picked up some remote work and whilst we were away we realised we could live on the road and still work and fund ourselves.

What core values guide your decisions and actions in life?

I am a massive believer in karma and that definitely has an impact on a lot of the things that we do. We always try to be as helpful and kind as possible.

How have your values evolved over time?

I, historically, have been quite materialistic but with those things bring added stress. We decided when we first met that we wanted to live a much simpler life and to just enjoy it without the need to be working in an ultra stressful job for 10+ hours a day sometimes 6 days a week and never getting to experience what life is really about.

What are you most proud of in your life so far?

I am most proud that we have managed to do such a brilliant job of raising our son Rory despite us being on the road. When we first set off he was only 4 months old and now he is over 2 and everyone comments on what a wonderful child he is.

How do you envision your future?

Our vision for the future is to try and reduce our outgoings to the absolute minimum so that we can work less and still travel around. Our dream is to travel around in our motorhome and to be able to make a living from our travelling.

What advice would you give to someone facing a major life decision?

Try not to worry too much about it, nothing ever turns out as bad as you play it out in your mind. Be brave, be bold and do it.
