George: From Maths teacher to full time vanlifer

It only seemed fitting for the first ‘living alternatively’ post to be all about my husband, George! For a little back story, he grew up in Rochdale until he decided to study Maths at the University of Reading (where we met!). We then moved to a small market town called Bacup after University for 5 and a half years where George was a Maths teacher at a secondary school. In May 2024, we sold almost everything we had (including our house!) in favour of alternative living – vanlife.

Was your decision to live alternatively a sudden realisation or a build up of moments over time?

A build up of moments, and books!

Any particular books?

The Monk who sold his Ferrari by Robin Sharma and The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

How do you approach making major life decisions?

Usually I start the process of what I think is right and in time you know if it’s right or wrong. If you are doing it for yourself and no one else it is the right thing to do.

Have you ever made a major life decision based on the needs or opinions of someone else?

Yes. I did a math’s degree because my form tutor told me I wasn’t able to do it.

What core values guide your decisions and actions in life?

Be kind.

How have your values evolved over time?

They have evolved drastically over the past 6-7 years. It probably started since going vegan. It’s made me question everything.

What are your hobbies?

Surfing, running, reading, learning Spanish, van conversions, watching football (Man City fan) and the moto GP, hiking, camping, cycling, and wild swimming.

What are you most proud of in your life so far?

Doing a Via Ferrata. I’d developed a fear of heights at some point in my life and I conquered my fear by facing it head on by hanging over a 100m drop with nothing but me and an iron rope!

How do you envision your future?

Living in a cabin in the woods in the mountains self sufficiently.

What advice would you give to someone facing a major life decision?

You’re only ever 70% sure of a big decision. And like my uncle said, if people think you’re crazy then you are probably doing the right thing.
